5 Body Language Hacks for Young Speakers
Master these five simple techniques and you'll instantly look more confident — even before you open your mouth.
The 3-Second Eye Contact Rule
Hold eye contact with one person for about 3 seconds before moving on. Too short feels shifty; too long feels intense. Three seconds is the confidence sweet spot.
The Power Pose
Two minutes before your speech, stand in a wide, open posture (hands on hips or arms raised). Research shows it boosts confidence hormones and reduces anxiety.
Mirror Practice
Practise your speech in front of a mirror or on video. Watch your facial expressions and gestures — you will spot habits you never noticed before.
The Open Hands Rule
Whenever you speak, keep your palms facing up or out. Open palms are universally read as honest and welcoming — a simple trick that builds instant rapport.
Controlled Breathing & Stillness
Take a slow breath before you begin. Stillness is power — the audience will wait for you. A calm, unhurried start signals total confidence even if you feel nervous inside.
Why It Matters
Non-Verbal Skills That Last a Lifetime
Research by Professor Albert Mehrabian found that only 7% of a message comes from words alone — 38% comes from tone of voice and a striking 55% from body language. Teaching children to control and read non-verbal signals is one of the most powerful investments in their future success.
At School of Confidence, our trained facilitators weave body language awareness into every session. Children aged 5–16 practise in front of each other, learn to self-correct in real time, and graduate with the physical confidence that makes audiences lean in.
This interactive tool gives you a glimpse into the kind of engaging, body-focused activities your child will experience in our classes and holiday camps.
