Guide to Rating Your Child’s Communication Skills

When using the Communication Skills Progress Tracker, you’ll be asked to rate your child’s abilities on a scale of 1 to 10 in four key areas. Here’s how to approach each rating:

1. Public Speaking (1-10)

  • 1-2: Very reluctant to speak in front of others, shows signs of extreme nervousness
  • 3-4: Speaks in front of others but with considerable difficulty and discomfort
  • 5-6: Can deliver a short prepared speech with some confidence
  • 7-8: Comfortable speaking in front of familiar groups, shows good preparation
  • 9-10: Excellent public speaker, engages audience, handles Q&A well

Consider: How confidently does your child present in class? How do they handle school presentations?

2. Active Listening (1-10)

  • 1-2: Often seems distracted, rarely responds appropriately to what’s being said
  • 3-4: Listens inconsistently, sometimes misses key points in conversations
  • 5-6: Generally attentive, can usually recall main points of a conversation
  • 7-8: Listens carefully, asks relevant questions, shows good understanding
  • 9-10: Excellent listener, fully engaged, can summarize and expand on what’s been said

Consider: How well does your child follow multi-step instructions? Do they engage meaningfully in conversations?

3. Nonverbal Communication (1-10)

  • 1-2: Rarely makes eye contact, body language often inappropriate or confusing
  • 3-4: Inconsistent eye contact, limited use of gestures and facial expressions
  • 5-6: Makes eye contact, uses some appropriate gestures and expressions
  • 7-8: Good eye contact, effectively uses body language to enhance communication
  • 9-10: Excellent nonverbal skills, naturally aligns body language with spoken words

Consider: How well does your child maintain eye contact? Do their facial expressions match the conversation?

4. Confidence (1-10)

  • 1-2: Very shy, reluctant to engage in most social situations
  • 3-4: Participates when required, but shows clear discomfort
  • 5-6: Generally comfortable in familiar social situations
  • 7-8: Confident in most social situations, willing to take on new challenges
  • 9-10: Highly self-assured, comfortable in diverse social settings, natural leader

Consider: How readily does your child engage with peers or adults? How do they handle new social situations?

Tips for Accurate Rating

  1. Be consistent: Try to use the same criteria each time you rate.
  2. Consider recent events: Base your rating on observations from the past week or two.
  3. Look for progress: Compare to your child’s past performance, not to other children.
  4. Be objective: Try to set aside personal biases and look at observable behaviors.
  5. Seek input: If possible, get input from teachers or other adults who interact with your child.
  6. Use half points: If you’re torn between two numbers, it’s okay to use half points (e.g., 6.5).

Remember, the goal is to track progress over time. It’s normal and expected to see fluctuations in ratings. The long-term trend is what’s most important.
